In Pictures: Escape the Cold In Miami Beach

Miami Beach

I love the beach but I don’t find myself always craving a trip to the tropical sunshine like some of my friends. I am happy when I’m at a beach, any beach. But where I’m at in Tennessee right now, it’s cold. Really cold. I live in the South, where it’s not supposed to be hitting the 20s — for highs. And as I suffer through this frigid winter, I think the perfect remedy is to head to Miami Beach. I can’t be there, but I can relive past moments sitting in the sand, gazing at the perfect water and the awesome architecture of South Beach.

Miami Beach

When I first visited Miami Beach as a 7-year-old back in 1984 I thought it was the most awesome place. It was the first time my toes touched ocean water. I remember it was an overcast day, but that didn’t keep me from basking in the warm air, the smell of saltwater on the ocean breeze, and the views of really awesome people. Yes, I might have only been 7 but I knew the people sunning on the beach were just a little different than back home in modest central Arkansas. I will say I was more impressed with our visit later that day to Key West. The beautiful water to both sides of the road as we drove over the bridge was a memory of a lifetime.

If like me, you find yourself suffering through the frigid January weather but can’t get south to the coast, please feel free to let these snapshots of Miami Beach transport you to a warmer place.

  1. Definitely enticing photos, although I wasn’t a fan of Miami. We went once about 25+ years ago and haven’t been back. We passed through the south on our road trip and it was c-o-l-d, just saw on the national news that it isn’t warming up either! We are currently in Tucson, AZ and have been basking in the sun. Tomorrow is our last day and then we head north back to cold country, so not looking forward to being c-o-l-d again. I may have to look at your photos again!

  2. The pictures definitely transported me to a warmer place! Really nice article but now, looking out of my window at the rain and a sky the colour of concrete, I definitely need to hurry up an book some winter sun – looks perfect!
