I love the beach but I don’t find myself always craving a trip to the tropical sunshine like some of my friends. I am happy when I’m at a beach, any beach. But where I’m at in Tennessee right now, it’s cold. Really cold. I live in the South, where it’s not supposed to be hitting the 20s — for highs. And as I suffer through this frigid winter, I think the perfect remedy is to head to Miami Beach. I can’t be there, but I can relive past moments sitting in the sand, gazing at the perfect water and the awesome architecture of South Beach.
When I first visited Miami Beach as a 7-year-old back in 1984 I thought it was the most awesome place. It was the first time my toes touched ocean water. I remember it was an overcast day, but that didn’t keep me from basking in the warm air, the smell of saltwater on the ocean breeze, and the views of really awesome people. Yes, I might have only been 7 but I knew the people sunning on the beach were just a little different than back home in modest central Arkansas. I will say I was more impressed with our visit later that day to Key West. The beautiful water to both sides of the road as we drove over the bridge was a memory of a lifetime.
If like me, you find yourself suffering through the frigid January weather but can’t get south to the coast, please feel free to let these snapshots of Miami Beach transport you to a warmer place.
