Baseball Spring Training Travel in Phoenix

baseball spring training

What’s a better travel experience for a sports-obsessed fan than a visit to baseball spring training? I’ve traveled for the four major professional sports leagues in North America, not to mention college football and basketball, the Olympics and Premier League soccer. But there is just something about baseball travel that gets me excited.

One of the many publications and websites I have the honor to write for is Jetset Extra, and I will be traveling to Scottsdale, Ariz., next week to cover baseball spring training for the site. I’ve never attended baseball spring training, so I’m really excited. The Phoenix area is home to the Cactus League, where 15 of the 30 Major League Baseball teams get ready for the upcoming season.

On the northeast side of Phoenix, Scottsdale is home to three teams, including the world-champion San Francisco Giants. If I play my cards right, I’ll get to see my Texas Rangers play at the Giants while I’m in town.

If you are a baseball fan and haven’t considered spring training travel I think attending Cactus League games would be a really fun way to attend a few games while exploring all the fun of a major city and the nearby outdoors.

The 15 teams are located in and around Phoenix, all within an easy drive of each other. I wrote in detail about spring training travel in Phoenix in The Daily Traveler, my travel column that appears every other week in The Daily News in Memphis. Check out “Baseball Heaven Found in Phoenix” here.

  1. I know a lot of people who would love this…me, not so much! Haha, for some reason, I just don’t get along so well with baseball. BUT, for someone who is a sports fan, this is the ideal trip. I know a lot of people who have gone to Spring Training and they only have good things to say. Enjoy!

  2. You know I like the idea of combining sports and travel. I don’t love baseball, but I do love attending baseball games. Add to that spring in Arizona and I’m sold!

  3. I have a buddy who heads down to Florida every March for Spring Training mainly to watch the Toronto Blue Jays play. Then he will combine it with another sports event, like a Tampa Bay hockey game. I try to combine sports with my travel adventures, too, so Spring Training might be a good way to do that. Wasn’t really interested in Florida, but Arizona does sound really appealing. Thanks for the advice!
