Back on the bus to Fort Lauderdale, my eyes are still dry from sitting in the front of a Florida Everglades airboat. I couldn’t close my eyes; they had been peeled open for the past hour as I tried to catch a glimpse of an alligator in the pitch-black darkness of night. A ride that had started as the waning sun sat over the edge of the Florida Everglades, this had been an experience unlike a typical daytime journey into this majestic river of grass.
I love the beach but I don’t find myself always craving a trip to the tropical sunshine like some of my friends. I am happy when I’m at a beach, any beach. But where I’m at in Tennessee right now, it’s cold. Really cold. I live in the South, where it’s not supposed to be hitting the 20s — for highs. And as I suffer through this frigid winter, I think the perfect remedy is to head to Miami Beach. I can’t be there, but I can relive past moments sitting in the sand, gazing at the perfect water and the awesome architecture of South Beach.
