Sometimes, the unexpected decisions turn out to be the best ones. As summer began, our family travel plans were looking like a visit to New York City and a few days at a beach along the U.S. Gulf Coast. But funny what can happen when I sit down with a map and start exploring possibilities. Puerto Rico is what can happen, and out of that unexpected decision came a beach vacation gem: the San Juan Marriott Resort.
Writing the above headline makes me think of the line from “Sweet Home Alabama” when Reese Witherspoon’s character says to an old high school friend, “You have a baby … in a bar!” Yes, we visited a casino with our 7-year-old son. We decided to drive south of Memphis to the Mississippi gaming community to discover if kid-friendly Tunica really does exist. We were only in Tunica County for a night, but it was long enough to have a little family fun at Gold Strike at MGM Resort.
Visiting New York City and enjoying the city like residents always has been our top priority when in the Big Apple. The neighborhoods are unique, and we prefer to find a New York City apartment to stay where we can enjoy the city like locals. On our most recent visit, we were able to experience a new neighborhood, Gramercy, when we stayed a couple nights in a MySuites apartment.
When we choose a hotel for a trip, a number of criteria go into the selection. It really depends on what we’re wanting to get out of the stay, but location is consistently near the top. I want to be able to either walk or have a short drive to most of what we’re in town to experience. So when we found ourselves staying the weekend in Memphis for our NBA Road Trip series, having a hotel near the action at FedExForum was a plus. The fact museums, restaurants, shopping and nightlife also were all within walking distance made the Westin Memphis Beale Street hotel a good choice for this trip. But could it be a winner for us?
Our recent weekend stay in Downtown Memphis was centered on attending a Memphis Grizzlies game as part of the third installment of our NBA Road Trip Series. But we discovered so much more than just NBA fun during our 48 hours in Memphis experience. And on the surface, that might seem hard to believe, considering we’re residents of the Memphis area. But staying in a downtown hotel helped us enjoy 48 hours in Memphis like we’ve never done before.
